Inthispoem,then,thepoet’spersonareflectsuponthemorning/dawnsymbol
ofthenightingaleanditshopesaslover,andrejectsallhope,inthatloveof
rosescomeswiththeprickofthethorn,andthatistheunchangingfateofthe
world.^37
Asforthemorninglibationofwine,Sab ̄. u.h,whichoccurssixtimes,alwayspaired
withanotherwordformorningorlatenight(itappearsafurtherninetimesin
othertokensofthelexemeṣabūḥī,ṣabūḥī-zadagān)–wewillcometothistoposin
thediscussionbelow,onthesacralityofdawn.
Wealsofindtheeasterlymorningbreeze,Sab ̄. a,whichisinvoked105timesin
Ḥāfiẓ’sghazals(mostprobablymorethanthatinhisentireoeuvre,ifwealsocount
hisotherforms)–thatistosay,almostoneofeveryfiveghazals.Anotherwordfor
thebreeze,Nas ̄ım,occurs65timesandmaysometimes,butnotalways,waftat
dawn.Thisbreezeisassociatedwithsunriseandspringtime,coolnessandfragrance,
whichmaketheflowersblossom.Itisalsothebreezetowhichloverstelltheir
secrets.KhurramshāhīisoftheopinionthatḤāfiẓmayusethesymbolofthe
pleasantfragrantbreezeofmorning(nasīm,withwhichhemoreorlessseemsto
