When setting up a cluster, you also must consider the quorum model chosen. Confi guring quorum is outside the
scope of this chapter, but if you’d like to read more about it, you can read the TechNet guide Failover Cluster Step-
by-Step Guide: Configuring the Quorum in a Failover Cluster at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/
library/cc770620.aspx.
Quorum is basically the number of elements that need to be online for the cluster to remain online. By default in
Windows Server 2008 and higher, when you create a cluster, the software automatically selects the quorum con-
fi guration that provides the highest availability for your cluster confi guration. This default, however, may not be
the best for you based on your environment’s confi guration. A good post that covers AlwaysOn Availability Groups
and quorum considerations is this post by Mark Broadbent at http://tenbulls.co.uk/2012/04/05/
