under its name though fundamentally differing
fromitinessence. Themostheroicself-sacrifices
havebeeninspiredbyit,whilethemostterrible
sacrificesofothershave been brought aboutby
itspseudo-sisterfanaticism. Itisaspowerfula
lever for raisinga man as is the otherfor his
degradation. The two sway mankind with
over-mastering power, and in some of their
manifestations show an illusory resemblance
;
but theonehasitsrootsinknowledge,theother
inignorance; the one bears thefruits of love,
theotherthepoison-applesofhate.
