FEW of the perilswhich beset the pathof


theseriousaspirantaremoredepressingin


their nature, more fatal in their effects, than


what is called spiritual darkness-the gloom


whichdescendsontheheartandbrain,wrappmg


the whole naturein its sombre folds, blottmg


out all memories of past peace, all hopes of


future progress. As a dense fog pervades a


great city,stealing mtoeverynook andcorner,


effacing every familiar landmark, shutting off


everyvista,blurringmtodimnesseventhebrilhant


lights,until,tothebewilderedwayfarer,nothing

seemsleftsavehimselfand thestiflingmephitic


vapour that enfolds him,soisitwhen the fog


ofspiritualdarknesscomesdownontheaspirant


orthe disciple. All hislandmarks disappear,


andthewayvanishesinthegloom; hiswonted


lightsareshornoftheirlustre,andhumanbeings


aremereshadowsthatnowand again pushup


againsthimoutof thenight and intothenight


againdisappear. Heisaloneandlost; asense
