inproportion aswedo that,that therewillbe


within them the faint stirrings of thespirit,so


overlaidthattheyarenotconsciousofitintheir

ordinarylife; and if there is one dutyof the


preacherof religionmore vital than another,it


isthat allwhohearhimshallfeelwithinthem-


selvesthestirringoftheDivine.

LookingthusateverymanasDivineatheart,


we begin to ask: If that be the meaning of


spiritand spiritual life,whatisthe methodfor


itsunfolding? Thefirst stepisthatwhichhas


justbeen mentioned,togetpeopletobelievein


it,tothrowasideall that has been said about


theheartof manbeing"desperatelywicked;

tothrowasideallthatissaidaboutoriginalsin.


Thereisnooriginalsinsaveignorance,andinto


that we are all born,andwe have slowly to


grow out of it by experience,which gives us


wisdom. That is the starting point, as the


conscioussenseofunityisthecrown. Andthe


methodofspirituallifeisthatwhichenablesthe


lifetoshowitself forth inrealityasiteverisin
