Herbal treatment The herbal formula used was a variation of Gui Pi Tang Tonifying the
Spleen Decoction:


Huang Qi Radix Astragali membranacei 9 g
Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae 6 g
Dang Shen Radix Codonopsis pilosulae 6 g
Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos 6 g
Long Yan Rou Arillus Euphoriae longanae 6 g
Suan Zao Ren Semen Ziziphi spinosae 3 g
Mu Xiang Radix Saussureae 3 g
Dang Gui Radix Angelicae sinensis 9 g
Yi Mu Cao Herba Leonori heterophylli 4 g
Sheng Di Huang Radix Rehmanniae glutinosae 6 g
Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae albae 6 g
Xian He Cao Herba Agrimoniae pilosae 6 g
Ai Ye Folium Artemisiae 4 g
Xu Duan Radix Dipsaci 6 g
Chi Shao Radix Paeoniae rubrae 4 g
Hong Zao Fructus Ziziphi jujubae 3 dates

Explanation The prescription can be explained in the light of the four aims of
treatment outlined above:


Harmonize Blood
Nourish Blood Dang Gui, Sheng Di Huang
Move Blood Yi Mu Cao, Chi Shao
Calm Blood Sheng Di Huang, Bai Shao
Stop bleeding Xian He Cao, Ai Ye

Treat the Root (deficiency of Kidneys and Liver)Sheng Di Huang,
Dang Gui, Xu Duan

AstringeSuan Zao Ren

Treat QiDang Shen, Huang Qi, Bai Zhu to tonify and raiseQi.


The bleeding stopped almost immediately for 20 days out of a 28-day
cycle; during the other 8 days the amount of bleeding was much
decreased. After four months of treatment her periods were restored to
complete normality.
