Explanation



  • Dan Nan Xing is the emperor herb to resolve Phlegm.

  • Gua Lou and Huang Qin are the minister herbs to clear Heat and resolve Phlegm.

  • Zhi Shi and Chen Pi are added to move Qi, which helps to resolve Phlegm.

  • Fu Ling and Ban Xia help to resolve Dampness and Phlegm.

  • Xing Ren makes Lung-Qi descent, which, at the same time, treats cough and also helps
    to resolve Phlegm.


This prescription is indicated for Phlegm-Heat in the Lungs, with symptoms of cough with
yellow sputum, breathlessness, tiredness, a Slippery pulse and a sticky yellow tongue coating.


In a case of chronic tiredness, it should be combined with one or two herbs to tonify the Spleen
such as Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae, or with the prescription Si Jun Zi Tang
Four Gentlemen Decoction.


This prescription is especially useful to treat the aftermath of an invasion of Wind-Heat which
has penetrated in the Interior and generated Phlegm-Heat in the Lungs.
