Xiao Jian Zhong Tang

Yi Tang Saccharum Granorum 30 g
Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae albae 18 g
Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi cassiae 9 g
Sheng Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis recens 10 g
Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 6 g
Da Zao Fructus Ziziphi jujubae 12 dates

Explanation



  • Yi Tang, Zhi Gan Cao and Da Zao are sweet in taste: they tonify Qi and stop pain of an
    Empty nature.

  • Gui Zhi and Sheng Jiang warm the channels and expel Cold.

  • Bai Shao, in combination with Gan Cao, stops pain.


Variations



  • If the condition is characterized by both a Deficiency and an Excess with pronounced
    Cold in the Intestines, add Gao Liang Jiang Rhizoma Alpiniae officinari and Gan Jiang
    Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis.

  • If the deficiency of Qi is pronounced add Huang Qi Radix Astragali membranacei: this
    addition transforms the above formula into Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang Astragalus
    Strengthening the Centre Decoction.

  • If there are pronounced symptoms of Dampness add Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis
    macrocephalae, Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos and Yi Yi Ren Semen Coicis lachryma
    jobi.

  • If there are symptoms of retention of food add Shan Zha Fructus Crataegi, Lai Fu Zi
    Semen Raphani sativi and Shen Qu Massa Fermentata Medicinalis.
