Diarrhoea: Spleen-Qi Deficiency-Male, Age 37


A 37-year-old man had been suffering from diarrhoea for 5 years. His stools were always loose
and occasionally like water. He was often very tired and his head felt muzzy.


His pulse was very Weak on the right side and his tongue was Pale and Swollen.


Diagnosis This is a clear case of Spleen-Qi deficiency with some Dampness and
Phlegm. It is Dampness and Phlegm in the head that cause it to feel
muzzy.


Treatment principle The treatment principle used was to tonify Spleen-Qi and resolve
Dampness. This patient was treated with acupuncture and a patent
remedy.


Acupuncture The main acupuncture points used (with reinforcing method) were:


ST-36 Zusanli, SP-6 Sanyinjiao, BL-20 Pishu, BL-21 Weishu and
Ren-12 Zhongwan to tonify Stomach and Spleen.

ST-25 Tianshu and Ren-6 Qihai with moxa on ginger to tonify Qi and
stop diarrhoea.

ST-37 Shangjuxu, Lower Sea point of the Large Intestine, is specific to
stop chronic diarrhoea.

Herbal treatment The remedy used was Shen Ling Bai Zhu Wan
Ginseng-Poria-Atractylodis Pill which is specific to tonify Spleen-Qi
and stop chronic diarrhoea.


This patient's condition was cured after 9 months of treatment.

Kidney-Yang Deficiency


Clinical Manifestations


Early-morning diarrhoea, abdominal pain, borborygmi which stop after the bowel movement,
weak back and knees.


Tongue: Pale, teeth marks.


Pulse: Weak and Deep.
