Learning Objectives
At the end of the chapter, the student will be able to
1 Describe the pathology for several illnesses of the respiratory system.
2 Describe the assessment signs and symptoms seen in children with res-
piratory difficulties.
3 Relate the assessment findings regarding respiratory difficulties specif-
ically to the most common childhood illnesses in the upper and lower
respiratory system.
4 Discuss the treatment recommended for viral and infectious disease
processes of the upper and lower respiratory system.
5 Provide support to the child and family through education on measures
that will encourage compliance and minimize physical and psychological
morbidity of respiratory illnesses.
6 Recognize cardinal signs and symptoms of the respiratory system that
suggest life-threatening emergencies.
