Layers of the Heart Wall
5–1 The heart is a four-chambered muscular organ located in the mediastin/um,
the area of the chest between the lungs. Its primary purpose is to pump blood through
the arteries, veins, and capillaries. The walls of the heart are composed of the
(1) endocardium,(2) myocardium, and (3) pericardium. Review the structures
of the heart and label its three layers in Figure 5–2.
