Far Cry 6
PARADISE Lush tropical
jungle; overpowered weapons;
freedom to approach from any angle.

could, especially on Nvidia; things are
getting a bit familiar.

VERDICT
Everything from Far Cry 5 is here,
including the treasure hunts that were
a standout feature of that game. They’re
no less intricate but have widened their
scope. One has us chasing a pelican
across the map for a rifle, while another
sees us pursuing a mongoose down
the street trying to recover the key it’s
swallowed, which is hilarious, but the
reward of a single pistol at the end of it is
not. Especially as we’re already packing
Robocop’s gun from the season pass
rewards, an overpowered silenced pistol
that fires bursts of armor-piercing ammo.
Unusually for a Ubisoft game, the
performance is pretty bad. Our AMD
Threadripper/RTX 3080 machine saw
drops to 4 fps that required restarts
following fast travel, or just moving a
finger near the screenshot button. We
couldn’t go near the high-res texture
pack, which calls for 1 1GB of VRAM,
presumably to freeze out the 3 080. The
game has AMD logos at the start, so the
16GB RX Cards are clearly in favor here.
Eventually, we reached a compromise,
running at plain old 4 K ultra with ray
tracing on for reflections and shadows
netted 5 0fps, and messing around with
FidelityFX Super Resolution unlocked the
magic next 10 frames.
Maybe it’s just because we were
annoyed that the superior HD textures
were out of reach, but the game doesn’t
look that ultra. Even Esposito’s chewing
of the scenery lacks bite. Despite being
broken by waves, the water is flat, the
sand has the texture of a fiberglass pool
liner, the trees seem repetitive, and
we’ve come across floating rocks and
seen things such as the textures on an
alligator’s nose suddenly drop to a much
lower resolution. Things can flicker,
which is annoying as certain objects are
meant to flash to attract your attention.
However, we are playing on code that
arrived one day before release and, at the
time of writing, hadn’t been patched. So,
it's possible that things may be different
by the time you read this.
So what would Vaas make of Far Cry 6?
Given that we discovered corpses under
a bridge, executed using his signature
‘tied to a rock and chucked in the
water’ method, we suspect he’s around
somewhere (he’s returning for the DLC,
along with villains from Far Cry 4 and 5 ).
As for us, we’re still doing the same things
over and over, having a good time but
starting to wonder if, just maybe, there’s
more to life than this. – IAN EVENDEN
