The pluperfect in the text
1 USAGE
a The pluperfect is used as in English to indicate a past action completed before another past
action.
In the text, the story of Michel Favart is narrated in the past. He became engaged to V. G. – Il
se fiançait(line 9). This happened five years after he had taken and failed the Polytechnique
entrance examination. Lines 1–9 record facts which all happened before his engagement,
hence the use of the pluperfect.

The pluperfect of a verb is formed by using the imperfect of êtreor avoirplus the past participle
of the verb.
