regardspurposeandvalue,Ineedmeaningandtranquility.InpaintingIamnot
satisfiedwiththemuscularacrobaticsofviolentlinesandexplosivecolors,withtheir
compasslcssabandon.Isuspectthe ego-dominatedvisualexercisesinpersonality
competition.Iamsearchingforthoselow-energyexperienceswhich,intheirsub-
duedscale,allowmoreembracingpatternsoforder.Iamseekingaffinitiesbetween
mycompletemomentsandthe patternsofmysurroundingsandhavefoundfor
myselfanewmeaningforlandscape.Thetranquil,yetverv'muchalive,rhythmof
someage-old,commonplaceexperiences—asunset—branchofatree—suggestfor
methecoherenceandcompletenesssolackinginoururbanindustrializedchaos.By
paintingthemIkeepthemtoguidemetotherichpotentialvaluesinherentinthe
newlandscapeofthescientificworld.

theRoyalAcademyofFineArtsinBudapest.
In 1937 hecametotheUnitedStatesofAmericatoheadtheLightandColor
DepartmentoftheInstituteofDesigninChicago,apositionhehelduntil1943.In
1946 hejoinedthefacultyoftheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyasprofessor
ofvisualdesignattheSchoolof.ArchitectureandPlanning.
Hisworkhasbeenseeninone-manandgroupshowsinBudapest,Vienna,Berlin,
London,Copenhagen,Stockholm,Amsterdam,andtheUnitedStatesofAmerica.
HehasalsodonegraphicdesignsforFortunemagazine,theContainerCorporation
ofAmerica,andAbbottLaboratories,between1938-1950.In^1939 and^1949 hewas
given'anawardbythe.AmericanInstituteofGraphic.Arts.Kepescollaboratedwith
L.Moholy-NagyonfilmandtheaterprojectsinBerlinandhasworkedonvarious
housingexhibitions.HecreateddecorativepanelsfortheGraduateCenteratHarvard
University,Cambridge,Massachusetts,in1950-1951, anddidaporcelainexterior
muralfortheFitchburgChildren'sLibraryatFitchburg,Ma.ssachusetts..\bookby
