VanceKirklandwasborninConvoy,Ohio,in1904.HestudiedattheCleveland
School(nowInstitute)ofArtandatWesternReserveUniversityinCleveland.In
1930 hetraveledinEurope,afterhavingbegunhisextensiveteachingcareerin 1929
bystartingaDepartmentofAnfortheUniversityofDenver.Threeyearslater,in
1932,hefoundedtheKirklandSchoolofArtanddirecteditforfourteenyears,
returningtotheUniversityofDenverin 1946 asDirectoroftheSchoolofArt,aposi-
tionwhichhestillholds.
Kirkland'sworkhasbeenexhibitedintheEastandMidwestandhasbeen
honoredwithpurchaseawards bytheDenver (Colorado)ArtMuseumandthe
WilliamRockhillNelsonGalleryofArtinKansasCity,Missouri.Hehasalsodone
ninemuralsforpostofficesandpublicbuildings.Hisworkformsapartofthe
collectionsoftheArtInstituteofChicago;WilliamRockhillNelsonGalleryofArt;
ColoradoSpringsFineArtsCenter;DenverArtMuseum;SantaBarbara(California)
MuseumofArt;NortonGalleryandSchoolofArt,WestPalmBeach,Florida;and
theUniversityofKansas.

spaceofarestaurant.Akaleidoscopeofchangingpatternswherethewaiters,the
lovers,thelobster,theloneeater,thegayparty-goersmeetforashorttime.They
areindividualsintentontheirownmoment,yettogetherinthisrendezvousthey
createawarmhumanity,aunity,aworldoverandbeyondthemselves."
KlcinholzwasborninBrooklyn,NewYork, 1901.Hewasgraduated from
FordhamUniversity,NewYork,butitwasnotuntil 1937 thathestartedtopaint.
Althoughhehashadsomeformaltraining,notablywithAlexanderDobkin, Sol
Wilson,andYasuoKuniyoshi, heismostlyself-taught. Hehastraveledinthis
country,Canada,Mexico,andSouth.\merica,andfromOctober 1948 toOctober
1950 livedandpaintedinEurope,principallyParis.
Awardsincludeafive-hundreddollarpurchaseprizeintheArtistsforVictory
showattheMetropolitanMuseumofArtinNewYorkin 1943 andThirdPrizefor
printsintheNewYorkStateFairExhibitionatSyracusein1951.In 1943 hewas
invitedtohaveaone-manshowatthePhillipsMemorialGalleryinWashington,
