togetsomeofthesubject'squalities,whetherwarmth,vitality,harshness,tenderness,
solemnessorgaityintoapicture.Forinstance,ifIampaintingasunbatherona
beachIwantittobewarmandopenandsimpleandsolidandlight-hearted,and
yetheavywithrelaxation,anditshouldalsohavethe freshnessofcleanair.I

present,instructorinpaintingattheCaliforniaSchoolofFineArtsinSanFrancisco.
TheSanFranciscoArtAssociationhonoredhisworkwithaprizein 1935 andagain
