fighting them with bombs: you sound as if you believed that the anti
communists of the MacArthur type have the same basis as you have.
They don't, of course, and that is the tragedy of the whole fight, that
people like you are forced to be allies of all the reactionaries who are
putting the whole native peoples of Asia and Africa straight into the
hands of Stalin. You are fighting to keep freedom, but you have to be
on the side of the guys who want to keep oil wells and rubber and what
not. It isn't a clean-cut war.
What do you want me to do? To start slanging communism in news
papers? Don't you realise that the Soviet School Laws given at the end
of I want to be like Stalin are laws that 99 % of the parents of Britain
would approve of as against the S'hill way? You have preached for years
that a patriarchal society has so castrated humanity that it must seek
hate and death, and now you seem to have turned completely round and
expect this society to fight the hate and death in Stalinism. And, really,
Reich, when you talk about the socialism of U.S.A. being the basis of
authoritarianism, what do you mean by the word socialism? Every
country has socialism if the word means public ownership of roads, post
offices, etc. A matter of degree. Here we have more than U.S.A. has,
yet here I can refuse to have Zoe vaccinated while you have to vaccinate
Peter when he goes to school. If Hamilton visited England no one would
ask if he were communist or fascist, and communism is much nearer
England than America geographically, and just as much feared.
What a pity we can't talk all this out.
We have just returned from nine days in Holland. I saw the cele
brated "free" school of Kees Boeke where the Dutch princesses attend
and do exactly as the others do. It is far from freedom; ordered freedom
describes it.
Fellow called P. writes from N.Y. saying some of the subscribers to
my seminar want to give me the fees as a gift to S'hill. Very kind of
them.
I look forward to reading about the conference. Mrs. Haymes writes
saying the members came back full of enthusiasm about it. Undiplomatic
of her to tell the frustrated me that.
Our love to you all· ... and, friend Reich, do stop lecturing me on my
basic principles. Damn you, man, they are in my work not in what I say.
P.S. The photo of the Observatory is intriguing. I take it that it will
finally have a dome for the telescope. Do you live in it? And if your
8 workers are to be there all winter how are they to earn any money to
