Chapter 2: Lenses

The Problems And How To Handle Them

When considering lenses, the first area I want to mention is that they need to be kept clean.

Of course any photographer knows not to take pictures with a dirty lens, but in macro/close-up
photography, keeping your lens clean has to become almost an obsession!

While a hair, speck of dust or piece of lint on the lens may be virtually unnoticeable in a
landscape scene or a portrait of the pretty girl next door – in macro work, the hair may be bigger
than some of the delicate areas of the subject you are shooting!

Never try shooting macro photos without first cleaning your lenses. You’ll see why the first time
you skip it.

I’m told it is also possible to actually clean the photo sensor. I’ve never done this so I can’t
advise as to how to go about it or whether it is even safe for the sensor. Proceed at your own risk.
