More Practice with Verb Forms
Exercise 1 Write AV in the blank if the verb is an action verb or LV if it is a linking
verb. Above each italicized word write DO for direct object, IO for indirect object, PN for
predicate noun, or PA for predicate adjective.
LV PN
Balto was a sled dog in Alaska.
AV IO
- He brought miners food and tools.
AV DO - In February 1925, he saved the town of Nome.
LV PN - Nome was a remote frontier town.
LV PA - Some people in Nome became very sick.
AV DO - They caught a disease called diphtheria.
AV DO - Nome had only one doctor.
AV DO - The doctor needed special medicine.
LV PA - The medicine was scarce.
AV IO - A hospital 800 miles away sent the doctor some medicine by train.
LV PA - The train soon became stuck in deep snow.
AV DO - Dog sleds carried the medicine the rest of the way.
AV DO - Balto led one of those teams.
LV PA - The February weather was brutal.
AV DO - A blizzard blew snow in the sled dogs’ eyes.
