City. They are just
two points behind
third-placed
Northampton
Town, who were
held 0-0 away to
Port Vale, after a
fifth win in six
matches. Kieran
Phillips, on-loan
from Huddersfield,
struck just before
half-time for the
visitors.
Mansfield Town
made it 11 matches
without defeat by
drawing 0-0 away
to Bristol Rovers.
Oldham Athletic
were denied two
vital points in their
fight against
relegation as
Mickey Demetriou
fired in an 89th-
minute equaliser
for Newport
County in a 3-3
draw. Oldham had
Dylan Bahamboula
sent off in the 69th
minute.
Bottom side
Scunthorpe
United lost 3-0
away to Swindon
Town.

The last time
Sutton United
hosted Forest
Green Rovers at
Gander Green
Lane both sides
were in the
National League
and 1,446
spectators
watched the
visitors win 2-1 in
their promotion
season. There was
more than double
that number in the
ground yesterday
for a 1-1 draw
between two sides
who are battling to
enter the third tier
for the first time
and are two of the
division’s form
teams.
Sutton, who
went in front
through Kenny
Davis’s free kick,
extended their
unbeaten run to
ten league games,
while it is 19
undefeated for
leaders Forest
Green. Kane
Wilson equalised
in the 60th minute.

The draw
extended Forest
Green’s lead at the
top to 11 points
after Tranmere
Rovers lost 1-0 at
struggling Walsall.
Walsall sacked
head coach Matt
Taylor last week
after seven
straight defeats.
But interim
manager Neil
McDonald
stopped the rot,
with Conor
Wilkinson scoring
an 85th-minute
penalty.
There are no
such problems for
the Matt Taylor in
charge at Exeter

Lincoln City thanks
to Chris Forino’s
85th-minute
header, but they
had Josh Scowen
sent off in
stoppage time.
Conor Grant’s
goal was enough
for Plymouth
Argyle to beat
Shrewsbury Town
1-0 and return to
the play-off
positions at the
expense of Oxford
United, who lost
3-2 at home to
Bolton Wanderers,
after twice going
in front. It was
Bolton’s sixth win
in seven games.
The bottom two,
Doncaster Rovers
and Crewe
Alexandra,
suffered emphatic
away defeats.
Crewe lost 4-1 to
Accrington
Stanley, while
Doncaster were
beaten 4-0 by
Portsmouth. It
was the bottom
club’s ninth loss in
11 games.

LEAGUE ONE

4
Cheltenham Town
beat Fleetwood
Town 2-0 to
record their
fourth game
without defeat

Alex Neil achieved
his first task as
Sunderland’s new
head coach:
stopping their run
of defeats, which
stood at three
(Peter Wilson
writes). They drew
1-1 away to AFC
Wimbledon. The
hosts, though,
have gone 12
league games
without a win and
played out the last
few minutes with
ten men, so he
may have hoped
for more.
The Dons went
in front through
Luke McCormick’s
20th-minute
penalty. Alex
Pritchard curled in
a free kick to
equalise 15
minutes later.
McCormick was
sent off in the 90th
minute.
The draw leaves
Sunderland four
points adrift of the
automatic
promotion places.
Second-placed

Wigan Athletic
came from behind
to beat Charlton
Athletic 2-1. With
table-toppers
Rotherham United
away to Sheffield
Wednesday today,
Wigan cut the lead
at the summit to
six points, but
with two games
in hand.
MK Dons, in
third, were held
0-0 at home by
Ipswich Town.
Fifth-placed
Wycombe
Wanderers, who
are without a win
in four games,
salvaged a 1 -1
draw away to

WHY OXFORD UNITED?
I’m not from Oxford, but I worked at
Radio Oxford in the early 1980s.
Seeing how the town thrived when
the team did well was a lightbulb
moment. I’ve been hooked ever
since.

EARLY MEMORIES
Taking my son Billy to the
Manor when he was tiny. I
asked if they had a crèche.
They did: a corner of the
supporters’ club bar. A
barmaid kept an eye on
him and I’d check in at
half-time. Something
must have happened to
him though, because he
caught the bug. He’s an
even bigger Oxford nut
than me now.

BEST OF TIMES
The big moments.
Winning the 1986 Milk Cup
Final at Wembley;
promotion back to the

Football League in 2010; beating
Premier League big boys Swansea
City, Newcastle United and West Ham
United in the cups and the joy on Joey
Beauchamp’s face after he scored a
wonder strike against Blackpool in
1996.

WORST OF TIMES
Losing 5-0 to Bristol Rovers, or
“Ruh”, in 2000. Billy was about
seven. Ruh scored their first and he
said “we’re going to equalise”. He got
upset after the second, wanted to
leave after the third and tears were
streaming down his face by the
fourth. We heard the fifth as we
walked away. We could never call
them Bristol Rovers after that, only
Bristol Ruh...

MY FAVOURITE PLAYER
Our forward Dave Kitson: a stunning
author, a great pundit and a
champion for mental health in sport.
He reminded me to be nice to my
team when they do bad: they’re
always trying.

MY MOST FRUSTRATING PLAYER
The wonderful, lovely giant Kevin
Francis, but only once. We’re 1-0 up
against Chelsea in the 1999 FA Cup
with five minutes to go. Kevin, all 6ft
7in of him, comes on and you can see
fear in the Chelsea faces. They don’t
know what to do and we are
delighted. However, he trips over his
own boot and brings down Gianluca
Vialli in the penalty area. They
equalise and then win the replay. But
as you can tell, I hold no grudges.

DO OXFORD UNITED REALLLY NEED A
NEW STADIUM?
It can blow a gale through our three-
sided ground and new stadiums
rejuvenate the area if they’re used all
year round for local sport. What you
don’t want is an enormous stadium
that you can never fill. Sometimes,
modesty is not a bad idea.

GOING UP?
You don’t follow football to win, you
follow it to hope. Automatic
promotion out of League One this
season is a long shot, but I imagine
we’ll be in the play-offs and that will
mean absolute joy. Our manager Karl
Robinson has passion, a big smile and
he gets good stuff out of his players.
He thrills us. We like what we’re
seeing.
