Then there were the meat-obsessed
Indian friends I encountered after I got
married and moved to Chicago. “You
really don’t eat meat? But you grew up
in America. Why would you give up
meat? Can’t you just pick it out?”
And there were the endless years of
attending work Christmas parties with
my husband, whose former boss and his
wife would insist on serving meat dishes
almost exclusively, even though they
knew my dietary restrictions. Even my
one safe haven (the salad) always had
bacon sprinkled on it.
Enough already!
