Formulation
First, environmental analysis yields a series of environ
mental opportunities. These are then subjected to the scrutinyof internal analysis to determine if, in fact, they are relevantbusiness opportunities. As a simultaneous process, environmental and internal analysis permit the firm to clearly recognizeits distinctivecompetencies and capabilities (or pinpoint thosefactors most fruitful for competencydevelopment). Then, therange of relevant business opportunitiesare evaluated fromthe perspective of the recognized distinctive capabilities andcompetencies. Those opportunities most consistent with thefirm's competencies andcapabilities are the ones that are actively pursued and becomethe focus for subsequent planningefforts.95
