Unit 2HO 2-6
(continued)As
a caveat, one must
recognize
that a business
may existwithout
any specific
distinctive competence.
In particular,
thismay occur
if consumer demand
is strong
in relation to industrysupply.
Here, simply
presenting
the product
or service to
adesirous
market i sufficient
to assure
at least short-term
success. However,
if t asiness
returns are
attractive and
industryentry barriers
are nc : prohibitive,
new businesses
will enter
andan
eventual competitive
shakeout
will occur. Under
these conditions,
the businesses
with firmly
established
competenciespossess the
greatest likelihood
of surviving.COMPETITIVE
WEAKNESSESJust as careful
environmental
and internal
analysis enables
theidentification
of
areas of distinctive
competency,
they also suggest
areas of competitive
weakness.
A competitive
weaknessrepresents
an area
of vulnerability-an
area where
competitorsrecognize
a meaningful
competitive
edge. Thus,
in a highlycompetitive
situation,
one firm's competency
is cften
anotherfirm's
competitive
weakness. Just
as competencit:
are developed
gradually,
competitive
weaknesses also
typically evolveover a period
of time.Through its
business life,
the things the
company has doneand the things
it has failed
to do have all
impacted this
determination
of competitive
weaknesses.
Once recognized,
compeive weaknesses
have motivational
effects on
the strategy process.Managers
may wish to
respond strategically,
not only
to capitalize on areas
of distinctive
competency, but
to minimize,
mitigate, or overcome
areas of
competitive weakness.
Areas
wherecompetitive
weaknesses
may be realized
are similar
to thosepreviously noted
for distinctive
competence.Small
businesspersons
are a proud
group. Often,
they areenthusiastically
enamored
with their
products and
businesses.They
may have great
difficulty
in recognizing
competitiveweaknesses. Generally,
this results
from an
unrealistic environmental analysis
of the competition
and an
unrealistic internalanalysis. This
is why it is
so important
to provide sound
