esserts take on a new meaning after weight
loss surgery. You may have had a sweet
tooth before surgery and now you notice your
desire for sweets has changed. This can be from
the surgery itself (if you had GBP) or simply
because you eat less sugar as a part of your new
lifestyle and therefore crave it less often. After
weight loss surgery you can still enjoy desserts,
but you need to keep some things in mind.

You don’t want to fill up your pouch with foods that don’t provide good
nutrition, so choose your desserts wisely. Look for desserts that include
some protein, fruit, or whole-grain carbs. Making your own sweets is healthier
than buying packaged foods from the supermarket because packaged foods
usually contain high-fructose corn syrup or trans fats. “Sugar-free” desserts
are usually made with sugar alcohols, which doesn’t mean they’re calorie-free.
Some folks have a problem tolerating sugar alcohols, as they can cause gastric
discomfort, so watch the portion size if you choose to eat these foods.

Some folks decide to have GBP surgery rather than AGB because they want
the possibility of getting dumping syndrome. This miserable reaction to
high-sugar and/or high-fat foods helps keep people on the straight and
narrow. Over time the severity of dumping syndrome usually lessens, and
some folks are tempted to push the envelope to see just how much they can
eat before getting sick. If you let sweets start creeping into your diet with
more frequency, before you know it, your sweet tooth is back. By limiting
sweets and sticking with healthier desserts like the recipes in this chapter,
you can keep your sugar cravings at bay and stay on track for your weight
loss goals.
