therebyattainthecovetedgoaloflife,spiritualenlightenment.Butitshouldalsobeclearlyunder-
stoodthatperfectioninthephysicalculturedoesnotautomaticallyconferspiritualenlightenment.
Thisiswhyphysicalcultureispartofthespiritualdisciplinesandnottheotherwayaround.Spiritual
enlightenmentrequiresanintegralpracticeofallmysticaldisciplinesandphysicalhealthisthebasic
first step on the road to self-knowledge.
Thehigherqualitydietsshouldnotbeattemptedwhenthereismentalagitationfromtheenvironment
orifonemustcarryoutworldlydutieswhichrequirealotofphysicalstrainuntiloneisabletomake
theslowtransitiontoabodywhichisfreefromwastesandisoperatingatpeakefficiency.Soslowly
changeyourdietandeatinghabits,andgraduallyadopttheteachingsatyourownpace.Inthemean
time,theyshouldbelookeduponasaritualdietforthosewhocansecludethemselvesfromthe
stressesoftheworld,preferablyundertheguidanceofaspiritualpreceptor.Otherwise,ahealthyve-
getariandietwillbeadequatefornormalspiritualdevelopment.Heavyfoodssuchasoverlycooked
foodsandmeatsarepoisonoustothebodyandproduceaggressive,agitatedmentaltendencies.
Changeslowly,evenifit’sonlytoonevegetarianmealperweek.Thesecretofsuccessinthespiritu-
aldisciplineliesinslowbutincrementalchangeinasetprogramleadingtowardsapermanentchange
inlifestyle.Alsodonoteattoexcess(morethanisrequiredtosustainthebody).Ifyounormally
overeat,changebyeatingoneteaspoonfullesspermealuntilyoueattwothirdsorthreequartersof
the normal serving.
Overcookedfoodsmeansanyconsumablethathasbeensubjectedtoanythingbeyondlightsteam
forafewminutes.Forexample,steamingcarrotsbeyondthepointwheretheybegintobecomesoft
wouldbeconsideredovercooking,bythesestandards.Overcookingtendstodestroythechemical
constitutionofthefoodinsuchawaythatthebodyrejectsitasaforeignsubstance(poison);toxic
conditions may arise over a short time or over long periods.
TheKemeticDietProgramrecommendsanorganicanduncookeddietasthebestfoodforhumanbe-
ings.However,asitisdifficultformostpeopletomakethetransitiontoanuncookeddiettheminim-
aluseofcookedfoodsisallowedformoderatelyhealthpeople(peoplewhoarenotsufferingfrom
diseaseatpresent.)TheymayadopttheKemeticDietMaintenanceProgramattheendofthisbook.
