Emigre magazine – Rudy Vanderlans, Menno Meyjes, Marc Susan
Since 1983 Zuzana Licko has been married to Rudy
Vanderlans, who launched Emigre magazine together with
Menno Meyjes and Marc Susan in 1984. The publication was
subtitled, ‘The magazine that ignores boundaries’, but rather
than ignoring the boundaries or limits of digital technologies,
Emigre placed them at the centre of attention. By combining
conventional methods of reproduction such as Xerox and
letterpress technology with computer graphics and digital
typography, Emigre showcased the limited possibilities of
the early Macintosh computers. The magazine also
reinforced the then-current fascination with the potential
future signifi cance of digital technologies. Thus, Emigre
remained one of the most infl uential design magazines until
the last issue was published in 2005. Even though only a few
copies of Emigre magazine remain available, Emigre Inc.
