New trends in Europe

By the time computers emerged, modern typography
already had a long-lasting tradition in Europe. As
European designers were more conscious of modernist
principles, the revolution was a little more moderate
in comparison to the new trends in the United States.
Rule books were reviewed rather than rejected.
Questions were raised and discussed, but remained
often unresolved. Interesting developments happened
within the dialectic tension between modernism
and postmodernism, in particular with regard to the
relationship between image and text.

‘Design, of course, is also
a form of expression, but
expression as a by-product of
the process rather than
self-expression as a
goal in itself...’
Simon Johnston
