The rules are:
- The plant with the dominant trait is always
crossed with an organism with the recessive
trait.
- If ANY offspring show the recessive trait,
the unknown genotype is heterozygous
- If ALL the offspring have the dominant
trait, the unknown genotype is homozygous
dominant
- Large numbers are needed for reliable
results.
And this is your first step into the world
of breeding because:
(1) When you breed plants you want to continue
a trait. Something that you like to see on your
plant or taste with your plant or the height of
your plant.
(2) When you want to continue that trait you
must know if it is Homozygous Dominant,
Heterozygous or Homozygous Recessive.
(3) You can find that out by running a test
cross.
So the question may arise. How do I breed
for several traits? Like taste, smell, vigour
and colour. Well that is a big question. Maybe
to understand more about that we should learn
more about Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium.
