Georgian era saw the opening
of the West India Dock in
1802, followed by several
others, while more docks
were built in Victorian times,
mainly further east, such as
Royal Victoria and Millwall.
Some were for ships to
anchor and be loaded or
unloaded; others were for
ships to be repaired.
‘Lightermen’ on small barges
carried the cargo between
ships and quays, while
