quayside workers dealt with
the goods onshore. In 1909
the PLA took over
management of the docks,
replacing a number of private
companies, and built the last
of the docks, the King George
V, in 1921.
The docks suffered heavy
bomb damage during the
Second World War and while
trade recovered in the 1950s
they weren’t big enough to
cope with larger vessels
