Without Disclosing My True Identity

kindness towards all and because they did not put themselves above others. They would
have been those of a broken heart and contrite spirit, living among their neighbors as the
Latter-day Anti-Nephi-Lehies.^113 By their light and example, others would have glorified their
“Father which is in heaven.”^114 They would have been a humble people whom others in
their communities would have wanted to protect, not destroy.
They could have been the “light of the world”—a “city...set on an hill [that could
not] be hid.”^115 They could have been the “salt of the earth”^116 and provided an enhanced
flavor showing how a human being can and should act towards others. But they were
not. They were many that were called, but few of them were chosen. The reason—
because their hearts were set so much upon the things of the world—one of which was
an organized and established religion, and they aspired so much to the honors of men—
one of which was their priesthood authority,^117 that they lost their “savor.”
Consequently, they were “thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be
trodden under foot of men.” It was Joseph’s role to remain with them and suffer the
consequences with them, even unto his own death.
