Thirty-Two (1837)
(^29) DHC, 2:492–3. “Monday, June 12.—I was taken sick, and kept [to] my room, unable to
attend to business. ...Tuesday, 13.—My afflictions continued to increase, and were very severe,
insomuch that I was unable to raise my head from my pillow when the brethren called to bid me
farewell. ...Wednesday, 14.—I continued to grow worse and worse until my sufferings were
excruciating...Dr. Levi Richards, at my request, administered to me herbs and mild food, and nursed
me with all tenderness and attention; ...This is one of the many instances in which I have suddenly
been brought from a state of health, to the borders of the grave.”

“Brethren, the keys of this higher, or Melchizedek Priesthood, that are necessary so that a
man can have the power and authority to administer the spiritual blessings to the members of the
church is that the man is privileged to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God so he can teach
them properly. This man must have the heavens opened up unto him and receive this understanding
by communicating with those who are in the presence of the Father and Jesus, the one who gave us
the new covenant of his gospel. Without this understanding, that can only come from communicating
with those sent from the presence of the Lord, that man will have no understanding; wherefore, that
man has no power or authority to administer any spiritual blessings to the church. That is what is
meant by the ‘keys’ of priesthood power and authority. Since none of you have this knowledge, and I
do, then you can testify to them that there is only one man upon this earth who holds all these keys.

SNS, XIX–XX. Omitted from D&C, section 137: “I saw the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb, who
are now upon the earth, who hold the keys of this last ministry, in foreign lands, standing together in
a circle, much fatigued, with their clothes tattered and feet swollen, with their eyes cast downward,
and Jesus standing in their midst, and they did not behold Him. The Savior looked upon them and
wept.” (History of the Church, Vol. 2, pgs. 380–1) Well would the Savior have reason to weep when
those who claim leadership over his people have ‘their eyes cast downward’ because ‘they [do] not behold
Him.’ Part of what they ‘do not behold’ is that the temple ordinances have absolutely nothing to do
with the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
