THIRTY-NINE
(1844)
Important reasons why Joseph was instructed to cause people to stumble are discussed. By nature, humans
desire to be governed, but must be reconciled to being governed by the laws of the Universe rather than by their
own laws. When true messengers try to help people remember what they have forgotten about their humanity,
they are generally killed. With the final stumbling blocks in place, Joseph’s martyrdom was assured.
Joseph expresses his benevolent feelings for those who forsook him.
An Eternal Perspective on the Value of Allowing Humankind to Stumble
Throughout this biography, it has been explained that “God” (advanced humans
responsible for our human development in this solar system) mandated Joseph to do what he did
so that the people would stumble.^1 This revelation of real truth might be hard for many readers to
accept and rationalize as something that a just and merciful God would do. Nevertheless, thus it is
for the sake of all humanity.
No free-willed human being, if given the choice, would accept the unconditional
surrender of his or her free will to an omnipotent and totalitarian government—one that would
enforce a set of unquestionable and unchangeable laws. This would be true unless the individual
(through his or her own experience) had learned that, upon submitting to such form of
government and its laws, a great expectation of individual happiness would be guaranteed; and
that non-submission would ensure misery.
The Order of the Universe
The laws that govern the Universe have always existed, are unchanging, and will never
change in the future. They exist throughout the Universe; and there is no part thereof that is not
under the jurisdiction of these laws. These eternal and unchangeable laws protect and perpetuate
the order of the Universe, which otherwise would allow for chaos and uncertainty. The Universe
and its laws exist for the sake of humankind—the only life form in existence that is conscious of its
own existence in relation to its environment. In other words, humans are the only life forms who
attempt to understand the Universe; all others simply exist without questioning why they exist.^2
Humankind currently living upon this earth is continually examining these laws,
attempting to better understand them and utilize them in the search for personal satisfaction and
happiness. There is no human upon this earth who can claim in honesty and integrity that he or
she has a complete understanding of these laws, or even a miniscule comprehension of them. We
might not understand all the laws that govern the order of the Universe, but we have had enough
experience upon this earth to understand that the laws invented by us while existing here have
never created equal satisfaction and happiness for all human beings and never would.
The Disorder of Mortality
We have learned, however, that it is our general disposition to be governed.^3
Upon being born into this world, we hardly find ourselves capable of understanding
