Apply Pastels as lightly as possible. Try to leave

some of the background surface showing through.

3. UNDERPAINTING
   The underpainting is the
   first layer of color placed
   on the surface. It gives a
   solid foundation for the
   next layers of pastel and
   sets the mood for your
   painting. The best way to
   create an underpainting is
   to block in the colors with
   the flat side of your pastel
   using broad strokes.
