Darken the main trees in the foreground with a charcoal stick. Use the sharp edge to highlight the small

branches and twigs. The tree trunks should contain fine lines that resemble bark.

Create light and shade by gently stroking the flat side of a mid-green pastel over the trees. Leave

the foreground grass in shade. Then highlight the distant trees and fields to indicate strong sunlight,

again using the flat side of the pastel.

Use the point of your smallest finger to smooth in the colors in the tree. Then press the tree trunk firmly

with your thumb, following a downward movement. This will fix the color into the background.
