Avoid resting your hand

on the pastel surface

to prevent smudging.

Use a sharp black pastel pencil to indicate shade.

Continue using the pastel pencil to increase the darker

shades inside the boathouse and underneath the trees.

Use the flat side of a dark green pastel to create

shadows of leaves across the branches and trees. With

the sharp edge, draw small bushes and ivy around

the base of the trees, and create tall grasses in the left

corner of the painting. Using the chisel edge, add a layer

of mid-green over the shadows around the trees, the

shore, and the grasses surrounding the front of the lake.
