Let’s split
To cut a timeline’s clip into
two chunks, place the playhead on it.
Ctrl–click and choose Split Clip from
the contextual menu. You can now
treat each section as an individual
clip and move it into a new position.Trim and add

event clip’s thumbnail to preview its
contents in the Viewer. Click on a clip
to select it. Drag the yellow handles to
choose a start and end point. Press +

To fade up from black, open
the Transitions browser. Drag the
Cross Dissolve transition in front of
the timeline’s first clip. By dragging the
same transition after the last clip, you

You can drag a timeline clip’s
start or end handle to trim its duration.
Alternatively, hold down R, then click
and drag across the clip to activate
a yellow trim box. Ctrl–click inside the

One way to creatively flow from
one clip to the next is to place a Cross
Dissolve transition between them. This
classic transition momentarily mixes
the two clips to signify, say, a change
of time or place.Reorder the clips
Add another clip and trim it. To
change the running order, drag a clip
before or after another shot. This
ability to swap clips around without
slicing physical film is why iMovie’s
called a non–linear video editor.

The timeline can begin to look cluttered once you’ve added a few clips to it. By
dragging the slider next to Settings (top right of the timeline) to the left, you can
zoom out to reveal more of the timeline’s content. Drag it right to zoom in for
a closer look at your edit. To see the entire timeline in an instant, press Shift+Z.
By default, each transition runs for one second. Double–click on a transition in
the timeline and type in a longer duration for a slower mix between the clips.
