PrOfOtO A1X
profoto.com
£949 / $1,095

The Profoto A1X may be one of the
more expensive hotshoe-mountable
flash units on the market, but it’s
also one of the easiest and most
reliable to use. It’s available in
Canon, Nikon and Sony fit with a
switch that lets you swap between
manual and TTL shooting. It also
has a Profoto AirTTL controller and
receiver built in.
It comes with a rechargeable Li-ion
battery that charges in around 80
minutes and powers up to approximately
450 full-power flashes, with a recycle
time of just one second.
Thanks to its round head, the A1X
produces attractive catchlights, and the
fall-off looks natural. While the results
look good with the bare flash, Profoto
supplies a magnet bounce card and
diffuser dome in the box, along with a
soft case. These dedicated modifiers
snap on easily when you need them and
can be quickly removed.

Profoto’s Connect provides a very easy way of remotely
triggering all Profoto AirTTL lights, including the A1X. It has
just three settings – Auto, Manual and off. In Auto mode, the
flash operates in TTL mode, and you can adjust the flash
exposure compensation. As you’d expect, in
Manual mode you have complete control over
the output.
Whichever mode you select, the flash
output can be varied via the free Profoto
iPhone app (compatible with the iPhone
7 and onwards), using the camera’s flash
controls or directly using the controls on the
light itself.
The Profoto Connect is incredibly easy to set
up and use. Once it’s paired with your lights,
you just pop it into the camera hotshoe, turn it
on and you’re off.
While it may lack the flexibility of control
that the Profoto Air Remote TTL provides, the
Profoto Connect also lacks the complexity, and
it is therefore a very good way of getting into off-
camera flash.
