Dynamic control
If you aren’t using elements such
as flash lighting to give a sense
of drama, then drop focus can
add a literal sense of depth to an
otherwise flat day – especially for
the flat skies we can get in the UK.

Consider the backdrop
It is often the background that
tells the story of an image, more
than just the subject. I use a lot of
dramatic skies and empty space
to add in that sense of storytelling.

Use composition wisely
In the judging, I’ll be looking for
careful use of composition to
set the scene and give images
a story or a sense of purpose.
I don’t want to see any horses
that are cropped nose-to-tail.
