Cefixime (Suprax)

Cefixime is athird-generationcephalosporin.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Although not approvedfor veterinary use,pharmacokinetic studiesin dogs have providedrecommended dosages.

20 mg/mL oralsuspension and 200and 400 mg tablets.

10 mg/kg q12h po; forcystitis: 5 mg/kg q12–24hpo.

Cefotaxime sodium(Claforan)

Cefotaxime is athird-generationcephalosporin. It is usedwhen resistance isencountered to otherantibiotics or wheninfection is in centralnervous system.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Third-generationcephalosporin used whenresistance encountered tofirst- andsecond-generationcephalosporins.

500 mg; 1, 2, and10 g vials forinjection.

Dog: 50 mg/kg IV, IM, SCq12h.Cat: 20–80 mg/kg q6h IV,IM.

Cefotetan disodium(Cefotan)

Cefotetan issecond-generationcephalosporin.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Second-generationcephalosporin similar tocefoxitin, but may havelonger half-life in dogs.

1, 2, and 10 g vialsfor injection.

30 mg/kg q8h IV, SC.

Cefoxitin sodium(Mefoxin)

Cefoxitin is asecond-generationcephalosporin. May haveincreased activity againstanaerobic bacteria.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Second-generationcephalosporin, which isoftenusedwhenactivityagainst anaerobic bacteriais desired.

1, 2, and 10 g vialsfor injection.

30 mg/kg q6–8h IV.
