Cefpodoxime proxetil(Simplicef)


Oral third-generationcephalosporin. Activityincludes gram-negativebacilli and staphylococci.


Vomiting and diarrhea arethe most commonadverse effects.


Approved for skin and softtissue infections in dogs.


100, 200 mgtablets.


Dog: 5–10 mg/kg poq24h.Cat: dose not established.


Ceftazidime (Fortaz,Ceptaz, Tazicef)

Third-generationcephalosporin.Ceftazidime has moreactivity than othercephalosporins againstPseudomonas aeruginosa.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Third-generationcephalosporin. May bereconstituted with 1%lidocaine for IM injection.

Vials (0.5, 1, 2, 6 g)reconstituted to280 mg/mL.

Dog and cat: 30 mg/kgq6h IV, IM.Dog: 30 mg/kg q4–6h SC.

Ceftiofur (Naxcel[ceftiofur sodium];Excenel [ceftiofur HCI]).

Ceftiofur spectrumresembles many of thethird-generationcephalosporins.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Available as powder forreconstitution prior toinjection. Afterreconstitution, stable for 7days when refrigerated or12h at room temperature,or frozen for 8 weeks.

50 mg/mL injection.

2.2–4.4 mg/kg SC q24h(for urinary tractinfections).

Cephalexin (Keflex andgeneric forms)

Cephalexin is afirst-generationcephalosporin.

Similar to those of othercephalosporins.

Although not approvedfor veterinary use, trials indogs with pyodermashow efficacy.

250, 500 mgcapsules; 250,500 mg tablets;100 mg/mL or 125,250 mg/5 mL oralsuspension.

10–30 mg/kg q6–12h po;for pyoderma,22–35 mg/kg q12h po.
