Naproxen (Naprosyn,Naxen, Aleve[naproxen sodium])
NSAID. Action is viainhibition ofprostaglandins. Used fortreatment of inflammatorydisorders (e.g., arthritis).
Naproxen is a potentNSAID. Adverse effectsattributed to GI toxicityarecommontoallNSAIDs. Naproxen hasproduced seriousulceration in dogsbecause elimination indogs is many-fold slowerthan in people or horses.
Results of clinical studiesin animals have not beenreported. Use in animals(and doses) based onpharmacokinetic studiesin experimental animals.Caution when using theOTC formulation designedfor people because thetablet size is much largerthan safe dose for dogs.220 mg naproxen sodiumis equivalent to 200 mgnaproxen.
220 mg tablet(OTC); 25 mg/mLoral suspension;250, 375, 500 mgtablets (Rx).
Dog: 5 mg initially, then2 mg/kg q48h po.Cat: not recommended.
Neomycin (Biosol)
Aminoglycoside antibiotic.Neomycin differs fromother aminoglycosidesbecause it is administeredonly topically or orally.Systemic absorption isminimal from oral dose.
Although oral absorptionis so small that systemicadverse effects areunlikely, some oralabsorption has beendemonstrated in younganimals (calves).Alterations in intestinalbacterial flora fromtherapy may causediarrhea.
Neomycin is primarilyused for oral treatment ofdiarrhea. Efficacy for thisindication (especially fornonspecific diarrhea) isquestionable. Used alsofor treatment of hepaticencephalopathy.
500 mg bolus;200 mg/mL oralliquid.
10–20 mg/kg q6–12h po.
Nilenpyram (Capstar)
Antiparasitic drug. Itrapidly kills adult fleas.
No adverse reactions arereported. It was safe instudies in dogs and cats inwhichupto10

Do not use in dogs or catsless than 1 kg (2 pounds)in weight. Do not use incats or dogs less than 4weeks of age.
Tablet: 11.4 or57 mg.
