DIY done right
Personalize your table setting
by adding handmade elements
to it. Try Jenny’s ideas: Glue
together paper doilies to create
a country-chic table runner
or turn textured fabric into
placemats. Use Scrabble tiles
to make place cards; tie a red
bow onto your spoon and fork;
add a candy cane to your hot
chocolate mug; and use gift
wrapper scraps to dress up
rolled table napkins.
Kid-approved
Set a separate table for your
kiddie guests. “Cover the table
with kraft paper, and corral a
set of colored markers in a can
and use it as a centerpiece to
encourage the kids to doodle,”
says Jenny.
Rustic touch
“Cherry branches and pine
cones lend a down-to-earth yet

shares Tala. Go all-out rustic by
throwing in succulents, tealight
candles, and bowls of nuts to
your centerpiece. Want to keep
it casual and cozy? Swap glasses
for mason jar mugs.
Fruits and nuts
Fresh fruits like apples and
pears make for great (and
edible!) place-card holders. Fill a
decorative glass container with
unshelled nuts, dried citrus, faux
cranberries, and cinnamon sticks
for a DIY centerpiece that looks
and smells good.
Extra glitz
“An easy way to make sure that
every corner of your house is
in tune with your theme is to
scatter some of your Christmas-
tree ornaments on your table,“
says Trinka. This adds more
sparkle to your tablescape, too.
Pretty presents
Who says all gifts need to be
under the tree? Show off your
prettiest wrapping paper on the
dinner table. “Wrapped gifts
with pretty bows can double as
your centerpiece, adding more
color and texture to your setup,”
says Jenny.
Ultra modern
“Update your holiday table by
getting creative with your color
palette,” suggests Tala. Navy
blue and delicate pink, and
black and white both make for
stunning setups.
Vintage appeal
Christmas is the perfect time
to bring out your heirloom
tableware. Fine china, antique
silverware, and crystal glasses
add a formal feel to the table.
Plus, using items handed down
from generation to generation
makes holiday celebrations even
more special.
Green and fresh
A bit of greenery is all your
neutral linens need to make
them holiday-appropriate.
“A naked wreath placed on
the table is a sophisticated
centerpiece that adds a focal
point to your setting,” says Tala
Singson, interior designer and
Real Living magazine’s assistant
style editor. “Layer other nature-
inspired items like a wood block
and evergreen branches at
different heights to create depth
and interest,” she adds.
Winter wonderland
An all-white setting is always
an elegant look. “Add seasonal
elements like miniature trees and

in gold or silver to glam up your
table. Don’t forget to bring out
your gold-trimmed glasses and
polished utensils, too,” suggests
freelance art director and prop
stylist Jenny Suarez.
Classic and
traditional
Think of the traditional red-and-
green palette as the anchor for a
clean and cohesive tablescape.
“Simple dinnerware, stemware,
and linen in timeless colors are
easier to mix, match, and update
with other pieces,” says prop
stylist Trinka Gonzales. Pair plain
pieces with ones in traditional
prints like plaids and stripes,
and pieces in similar hues for an
uncluttered look. “And keep the
Santa and reindeer accessories
to a minimum so your table
doesn’t look too literal and
dated,” she adds.
Your holiday table deserves a special touch. Make it
even more festive with these decorating tricks.
