BEST SPORT BOOKS OF

THIS CENTURY REVEALED

The 20th Sports
Book Awards in
association with
The Sunday Times
has announced
the best sports
books longlist of
the past 20 years.
Subjects on the
list including
sporting greats
Muhammad Ali, Sir
Alex Ferguson
and the late
Shane Warne.
The longlist has
been drawn up by
The Sports Book
Awards Academy,
which over the
past 20 years has
featured Sir
Michael Parkinson,
Sir Andrew
Strauss, Clare
Balding, Gabby
Logan, Brian
Moore, Sir Tim
Rice and the late
Bob Willis.
Football has
seven nominations
in the top 20, while
rugby union has
four. Sunday Times
sports writers
David Walsh and
Matthew Syed
both feature with
Seven Deadly Sins:
My Pursuit of
Lance Armstrong
and Bounce: The
Myth of Talent
and the Power of
Practice
respectively. The
list is as follows:

football in a park I have to boot
it. Even as a cyclist in training
I’d go trail biking and do
motocross. The better
coaches understood that
being happy is part of being a
fast cyclist.

MY FAVOURITE MEAL
I’m dead boring. Spaghetti
carbonara. People know what
I’m going to have as soon as I
sit down: my girlfriend’s bored
of it, my team-mates were
bored of it. A brownie for
dessert and a Peroni to drink.
Cheap date mate, cheap date.

I KNEW THE GAME WAS UP
WHEN...
When I made the Tokyo
Olympics team, that was me
done and dusted [he retired
during the Games]. My back
was getting worse. You’ve got
to think about the next 30
years and I’d had enough of
taking 15 minutes to warm up
before getting out of bed.

MY ONE REGRET
Every time I opened my mouth
when I was angry. My mouth
works faster than my brain
when I’m in an emotional
state. There were people in
power at British Cycling who I
could have dealt with
differently. If you ask people
nicely, show them your side of
the fence, it’s amazing how far
you can get.

ADVICE FOR A YOUNG
SPORTSPERSON
You can read all the textbooks
you want, but nothing
accelerates the learning
process like failure.
John Aizlewood
Ed Clancy, a three-time
Olympics gold medallist is
supporting Lazer Helmets on
the launch of their new
KinetiCore helmet

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
I’m not from a sporty family, I
just loved riding my BMX.
When I started racing
competitively I was picked up
by British Cycling’s talent
identification initiative.

MY BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT
It didn’t happen overnight,
that’s for sure. I loved it, I
didn’t care if there wasn’t a
future in it: if I could scrape a
living, it would be a living
worth scraping. The major
problem was I was rubbish, so
there was lots of not getting
anywhere until I made the
2005 World Championships.

THE COACH I LOOKED UP TO
Matt Parker. What I liked was
that he didn’t have any
experience of cycling — still
doesn’t — but had this
amazing desire to learn. He
was void of any ego, more
than happy to be challenged.
He’d go away, think about
things and give an answer.

MY CHILDHOOD HERO
My stepdad, Kevin Clancy. He
instigated that train of
thought from cycling being a
plaything to something I could
succeed in. Both me and my

brother weren’t achieving
academically. We’ve both
done good things and Kevin’s
been a real part of that.

CYCLING NEVER GOT ANY
BETTER THAN
Standing on the podium with
three of my best mates after
winning team pursuit gold at
London 2012. There’d been so
much pressure and
expectations because we
were no longer upcoming
plucky Brits.

MORNING I HAD THE HANGOVER
TO END ALL HANGOVERS
If you look closely at the 2012
closing ceremony footage,
you can see our pursuit team
sneaking across the pitch to
escape. After the best night
out ever, we came back on the
Tube the next morning, still in
our kit, horrifically drunk,
alongside everyone going to
work. There was so much love
for us.

MY FAVOURITE VENUE
Manchester Velodrome. It
feels like home. A lot of the
time there’s not a lot of people
watching and it’s very
business-like. It’s where all the
hard work’s done.

MY LEAST FAVOURITE VENUE
Any hilly road race. It could be
the most beautiful scenery in
the world — Livigno sticks out
— but I just hated climbing.

MY TOUGHEST OPPONENT
Team-wise, the Australian
pursuit team. When we went
over there in the 2012 World
Championships, it was like the
Ashes on wheels. Individually
the Dane, Lasse Hansen was
so tough. I rarely got the
better of him.

I LEARNT MOST FROM
My 2015 back operation. My
career had been success after
success, then nine months
before the Rio Games a disc in
my back prolapsed and I was
in a hospital bed, in danger of
losing everything. Getting
back to my best in a short
space of time and
rediscovering things you take
for granted, such as walking
without discomfort was a
steep learning curve.

MY GUILTY PLEASURE
Not staying still. If I see a

Proudest moment came at
2012 Games with, from left,
Geraint Thomas, Steven
Burke and Peter Kennaugh
