struck the winner
to take Wycombe’s
unbeaten run to
11 games.
Only a miracle
will save AFC
Wimbledon from
the drop. They
drew 1-1 away to
Fleetwood Town to
go a 26th league
game without a
win. Luke
McCormick gave
Wimbledon the
lead, but like so
many times in
recent months
they could not
hold onto it. Joe
Garner struck an
88th-minute
equaliser, which
lifted Fleetwood
out of the
drop zone.
Doncaster
Rovers are also
all but relegated,
despite a 2-0 win
against Burton
Albion, who had a
penalty saved at
0-0. Gillingham
dropped into the
relegation places
after a 3-1 defeat at
Portsmouth.

Oldham Athletic
were relegated last
night after their
home game with
Salford City was
first abandoned
and then
completed behind
closed doors. They
lost 2-1 and, with
Barrow and
Stevenage both
winning, were sent
crashing out of the
league after 115
years, becoming
the first former
Premier League
side to drop out of
the EFL. They will
join Scunthorpe
United in the
National League
next season.
The game was
called off 13
minutes from time,
at 2-1, when
Oldham fans
invaded the pitch
to protest at the
club’s owner,
Abdallah
Lemsagam,
something they
have done at
various times this
season. A banner

after the 5-1 defeat
of Cambridge
United, who had
Lloyd Jones sent
off after only 12
minutes. Ross
Stewart scored
twice for
Sunderland, who
extended their
unbeaten run to
11 matches.
Wycombe
Wanderers are in
sixth place after
their 1-0 win at
home to Sheffield
Wednesday. It was
the away side’s
first defeat in nine
matches and meant
they dropped from
fourth to seventh.

wilderness

men in sport. Always a man for a
great one-liner, his best was: “If we’re
still top of the table on January 1,
we’ll have thought Christmas has
come early.”

BEST OF TIMES?
Beating Bournemouth 9-0 in 1982,
during Harry Redknapp’s first match
as a manager. I had a lot to drink after

the game and left my car in a side
street by the ground. The next
morning it was so cold that when I
went back to get it, the lock had
frozen. I tried to force it open, and
someone told the police. Suddenly I
heard a siren and two policemen
were standing there asking what I
was doing. I explained: “At some
point the lock will unfreeze. I think
you’ll find, officer, that this key fits.”

WORST OF TIMES?
The 2011 season that ended with a
terrible two months without a win
and getting relegated from the
Football League. It’s a wilderness
outside that elite world when you’re
in non-League football. What’s key
there is the word “non”. There’s
something pejorative about it, being
a football club really does matter. It
was a massively important day when
Lincoln returned six years later.

FAVOURITE PLAYER?
Glenn Cockerill. Flamboyant
midfielder, I played tennis with him a
few times.

LEAST FAVOURITE PLAYER?
I always thought Gordon Hobson was
overrated until I got a water leak in
my flat. He was a part-time plumber,
and he came round and fixed it.
Afterwards he usurped Cockerill as
my favourite player. He was a brilliant
plumber.

THOUGHTS ON MICHAEL APPLETON?
The easiest thing to do as a pundit or
fan is to criticise the manager, which
always exonerates the players from
responsibility.

MY

CLUB

WHY LINCOLN?
I’ve spent most of my life watching
and supporting First Division and
then Premier League football but
there’s something hugely rewarding
and often more fulfilling about
watching lower leagues. You always
have a special place in your heart for
the first club you really “know”
and that for me is Lincoln City.

EARLY MEMORIES?
My first job in 1979 was with
the Lincolnshire Echo and I
was sent to interview the
Lincoln manager Colin
Murphy. I don’t think I’ve
ever been more nervous.
That meeting was my first
“real” football manager. He
kept me waiting two hours
but was unfailingly warm and
friendly and, to this day,
remains one of my favourite Murphy, centre, was full of one-liners
