Child Divided, Broglio drew from Heraclitus’s notion that “Nature loves to hide,” si-
multaneously referring to the tendency animals have to hide from humans and to our
impossibility of accessing the deepest workings of nature itself. Francis Bacon’s cutting
open of the animal therefore constituted a forceful attempt at “lifting the veil” through
“torture” (F. Bacon 1620, The New Organon, quoted in Broglio 2011:5), a totalizing vio-
lence that epistemologically compensated for our lost ability to otherwise “see deeply
inside” the animal—a gift Adam originally possessed, enabling him to name all animals
