“Don’t judge a pitch until both sides
have bowled on it,” Jack Brooks sug-
gested gently as he arrived for work at
Taunton early yesterday morning. It is
an old line reworked but still a good one
and it came to mind during an after-
noon when Somerset’s seamers, Brooks
among them, laid waste Warwickshire's
first innings, thereby making their own
side’s score of 458 seem formidable
indeed.
On a glorious afternoon for the sup-
porters congregated in this ground’s
many pavilions, Tom Abell's attack
took seven wickets for 113 runs before
some Jonathan Trott-like self-denial
from Sam Hain and a few uncomplicat-
ed whacks by the Australian debutant
Nathan McAndrew added 76 for the
eighth wicket. And even that relief was
brief. Hain was caught behind off Abell
for 54 and McAndrew fell to Craig
Overton for 47 shortly before the close.
Warwickshire's collapse followed a

This match will be decided by whichev-
er seam attack bowls more decisively in
the helpful conditions. One side has the
incomparable James Anderson, who in
the final session dismissed James Vince
for a second time as well as Joe Weath-
erley. Yet Lancashire, when they bat
last, will also have to contend with
international fast bowlers as well as
with Keith Barker, who took five of their
first-innings wickets.
From 105 for seven, Lancashire
recovered in much the same way as
Hampshire had the previous day, when
Nick Gubbins and Felix Organ added
92; yesterday Phil Salt and Tom Bailey,

Balderson and Rob Jones were both
caught behind the wicket, Kyle Abbott
and James Fuller finding sufficient
movement away from the bat.
Salt and Bailey, without much foot
movement but with good hand-eye
co-ordination, propelled Lancashire to
199 for seven but despite Hasan Ali
thumping useful runs at the end of the
innings, including a straight six off Ian
Holland, they fell ten runs short of a
fifth bonus point. There was no spin all
day and the over rate was desultory.
Luckily for Anderson, the guest of
honour at a fundraising dinner over the
way for Shaun Udal, the former Hamp-
shire and England off spinner who has
Parkinson’s disease, bad light led to
the players coming off 20 minutes
before he had to commence his first
course. And, for that matter, Kevan
James, Udal’s old friend and colleague
who was in charge of ceremonies, had
to make a hasty departure from the
commentary box.

president, David Acfield, will also
stand down.
The publication of an interim report
by Newton, which sets out the evidence
around the alleged incident in 2017, has
been delayed to allow her to complete
the second part of her investigation into
the culture at the club. That includes
allegations of racism, discrimination
and bullying made by the former
players Maurice Chambers, Zoheb
Sharif and Jahid Ahmed. The club
thought that publishing an interim
report could prejudice the second part
of the investigation.
Both the club and some former em-
ployees could face further charges so
Essex have decided to delay their
annual meeting until Newton’s final
report has been completed. If found
guilty of further charges of bringing the

game into disrepute or breaking the
ECB’s code of conduct, the club face
stiffer penalties.
It is expected that the full report will
implicate a past player and a former
coach, and could include some damning
evidence of the culture at the club under
previous administrations. The report is
likely to cast a further shadow on crick-
et, which has faced accusations of being
institutionally racist.
After testimony by Azeem Rafiq, the
former Yorkshire player, in front of
MPs in November, the digital, culture,
media and sport select committee has
asked the ECB to give quarterly updates
on its progress towards making the
sport more inclusive and less
discriminatory. The ECB is due to give
further evidence to the committee
next month.

both dropped when in single figures, put
on 94. The common denominator was
not only that the ball had lost its hard-
ness but also that both attacks are strong
when there is sufficient movement off
the pitch and through the air.
Any all-rounder called Bailey with
the initials TE should be one to watch.
Trevor was celebrated; Tom remains
unsung. He has deserved more than his
one wicket thus far and his half-centu-
ry, reached with a seventh four, square
driven off Mohammad Abbas, enabled
Lancashire to reach 240, only six runs
short of Hampshire’s first-innings total,
as did a similar contribution from Salt.
Resuming on 37 for one, Lancashire
were soon 83 for five, an improvement
of sorts on Hampshire’s 40 for five. The
difference now was that there was no
century-maker. The slips were kept
busy: Danny Lamb was caught low at
third, as was Josh Bohannon; Steven
Croft, attempting a wild carve, at first;
Bailey eventually at second. George

Abell’s bowlers hit straps to put

faltering champions on the rack

morning when home supporters had
arrived hoping to watch the late middle
order consolidate the strong position
established on Thursday. They saw pre-
cisely the opposite. Steve Davies ran
himself out with the help of a direct hit
from Craig Miles, who then bowled
Tom Banton and Overton with
successive deliveries. Two balls
later Ollie Hannon-Dalby cleaned
up Lewis Gregory but Somerset’s
last two wickets added 85 runs.
Josh Davey and Jack
Leach put on
another 44 and
Brooks clouted an
uninhibited 32 off 36
balls, thereby delaying lunch. No one
complained and nor were there ob-
jections an hour or so later when
Abell's seamers hit their straps
with some force.
Alex Davies was the first to go
and his departure set the tone
for an afternoon during
which Abell kept his slips in
place, the bowlers kept the
ball up to the bat and War-
wickshire's batsmen kept
getting out.

Davies edged Brooks to Overton at
slip. Dom Sibley and Rob Yates both fell
to Davey, whose fine spells were punc-
tuated by dramatic falls in his delivery
stride — he dropped to the ground like
a shot partridge, only to rise phoenix-
like a few minutes later.
Gregory’s own career has been
hampered by injury but no one
doubted his fitness yesterday as
he had Will Rhodes caught at
mid-on by Tom Lammonby,
to whom he had shovelled
the ball, and Matt Lamb
pouched at slip by Matt
Renshaw. Overton's dis-
missal of Michael Bur-
gess, caught behind by
Steve Davies, complet-
ed a wonderful couple
of hours for Somerset.
Abell brought Leach
on early in the evening
and the England slow left-
armer enjoyed immediate
success when he snared
Danny Briggs, leg-before
for 13.
The rest of the session
brought a little relief for
Warwickshire but the
champions are still
neck-deep in slurry.
