ROB WRIGHT’S WEEKEND GUIDE

Big-race trends
Qipco 2,000 Guineas
(3.40 Newmarket)
Aidan O’Brien has been the dominant
trainer in this classic, saddling a
record ten winners, including four of
the past seven. He saddles
Luxembourg and Point Lonsdale
today

Banker or bust?
King Of Time
(4.50 Newmarket)
An easy winner on both starts as a
juvenile last year, this well-bred son
of Kingman is open to plenty of
improvement. He looks to have been
let in lightly on his handicap debut
here. BANKER

Red-hot trainer
James Horton
A former assistant to the
great Sir Michael Stoute, Horton has
made a flying start to his training
career, with four winners from just 12
runners this month. He saddles Asjad
at Newmarket today

Repeat performance
Ready Freddie Go
(2.45 Thirsk)
A winner on all three starts at this
track, including this race 12 months
ago. He needed the run on his
reappearance at Beverley and should
be sharper with that run behind him
but looks a little high in the weights

What’s in a name
Pisanello
(2.05 Thirsk)
This gelding is a son of stallion
Raven’s Pass but owes his name to
his dam, Painting. Pisanello was a
highly regarded painter of the
early Italian Renaissance in the
15th century

Bet of the day
Asjad
(1.50 Newmarket)
This progressive sprinter made a
winning start for his new yard at
Redcar, having been bought for
80,000 guineas (£84,000). A 5lb
penalty might not stop him

Luxembourg can give O’Brien

more classic joy in Guineas

Rob Wright
Racing Editor

Aidan O’Brien has already won the
Qipco 2,000 Guineas on a record ten
occasions and the master Irish trainer
can strike again through Luxembourg
at Newmarket today.
Luxembourg won all three starts as a
juvenile, showing a fine turn of foot to
win the group two Beresford Stakes at
the Curragh in September before
signing off with a first top-flight win in
the Futurity Stakes at Doncaster.
This son of Camelot will surely stay
further later in the season but he is not
short of speed and his sire won this
classic before following up in the Derby.
The Futurity has been a good guide to
this race in recent years, with three of
the past four winners following up in
this race, while lack of a recent run is

not a concern as all of O’Brien’s 2,000
Guineas winners came here without a
prep run. He has his stable in fine form,
too, with 19 winners this month coming
at a strike-rate of 29 per cent, and
Luxembourg can add to his tally.
Godolphin’s trainer Charlie Appleby
is also in flying form, with a double at
Newmarket yesterday taking his tally
for the past fortnight to ten winners
from only 24 runners.
He will be hopeful of landing this clas-
sic for a first time, saddling the first two
in the betting in Native Trail and Coroe-
bus. Both have good claims, with Native
Trail having warmed up with success in
the Craven Stakes over this course and
distance. He is unbeaten but the drying
ground might not be in the favour of this
big colt, who hits the turf hard.
Coroebus is unlucky not to be un-
beaten himself, going for home much
too soon and collared late on when suf-

fering his only defeat at this track last
September. He, too, has good claims but
might just find Luxembourg too strong.
Asjad rates the best bet of the day in
the My Odds Boost on Betfair Handi-
cap (1.50). This gelding has been beaten
just twice in five career starts and has
had excuses on each occasion. He was a
smooth winner at Redcar this month
and, less exposed than most of his
rivals, he can shrug off a 5lb penalty
here.
Movin Time can give up-and-com-
ing apprentice Harry Davies another
success in the Betfair Daily Rewards
Suffolk Handicap (2.25). He showed his
liking for this track when thrashing
subsequent Queen’s Vase winner
Kemari by four lengths here last May.
He was a little disappointing in two
subsequent starts but has been gelded
since last season and could prove a cut
above these rivals.
