Fahey has the power to burst Native Trail’s bubble

If the Guineas is slowly run,
Native Trail may be vulnerable

It takes less than two minutes but is
where true legends begin and great
dreams die. Native Trail and the other
main contenders for today’s 2,000
Guineas have a lot more than prize
money to run for.
It’s the most fascinating, as well as
the first, of all the classics. For at this
stage it’s both possible to make a
reasonable case for at least half of the
15 runners, as well as to hope that one
of the top contenders could produce
the sort of performance that
measures up to the stars that have
gone before. At Newmarket’s National
Horseracing Museum on Monday,
Dancing Brave was inducted into the
Hall of Fame as a reminder of just
what greatness requires. Green

Desert later proved a top-class
sprinter, but in the 1986 2,000
Guineas, Dancing Brave left him for
dead, just as he did five group one
winners, who were spread out in front
of him in the Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe that October.
The hope today is that one of these
magnificently promising colts can
start to intrude on the same territory.
The snag, though, is that so much
depends on that word, “promising”.
Native Trail’s four wins as a two-year-
old established the Godolphin horse
as the best of these last season, which
is why he is rated 7lb clear of any of
his rivals.
But that was then; these are young
and improving athletes and only this
afternoon will tell us how much
Luxembourg, the other Godolphin
runner, Coroebus, the hugely stylish
recent winner, Eydon, or even the
unlikely, but unbeaten, outsiders
Checkandchallenge and Light
Infantry have flourished over the
winter. Native Trail is a massive

machine, almost 550kg, and primed
for today by continuing his unbeaten
run in the Craven Stakes over this
track a fortnight ago.
He is the obvious choice, but
history tells us we need to think of
the reasons why he should be beaten,
just as we should with all the others.
In Native Trail’s case, the stumbling
blocks could be that, for all his size,
there may not be much improvement
in a horse whose lack of instant
acceleration could make him
vulnerable in a slowly run race.
The same could be said for the
Coolmore pair Luxembourg and
Point Lonsdale, while the strong
case for Coroebus has to be
compromised by William
Buick choosing to ride
Native Trail, who is
odds-on, with
Coroebus at 9-2.
But with the

2,000 Guineas there is always the
wider dream that the winner should
go on for a tilt at the Derby and, just
maybe, after that, pitch for the St
Leger and land the triple crown,
which no horse has done since
Nijinsky in 1970, although the 2012
Guineas winner, Camelot, took the
Derby and was an unlucky St Leger
loser, so seeks paternal revenge with
his son, Luxembourg, this afternoon.
Luxembourg is Derby favourite at
present, with Native Trail’s 10-1 odds
reflecting the belief that he is
unlikely to run or to stay
the extra half-mile if
he did line up.
Of today’s other
runners, Coroebus
and Eydon are
fanciable Derby contenders,
as is the admirable Royal
Patronage, who got injured
behind Luxembourg last
year and could be a decent
place bet. Yet all this is to
ignore that oldest of all

athletic maxims, that it is speed that
counts, and we haven’t mentioned
Perfect Power, the speediest horse in
the race. None of his rivals could have
matched what Perfect Power did in
the Prix Morny and the Middle Park
Stakes over six furlongs last season,
and he punched home strongly over
seven furlongs in his comeback at
Newbury.
If Perfect Power were to last the
extra furlong and this 2,000 Guineas
became a last quarter-mile scramble,
it would be no surprise to see French
ace Christophe Soumillon delivering a
winning thrust for an overdue English
classic both for himself and for
Yorkshire’s favourite Irish émigré, the
trainer Richard Fahey.
In its own way, it would be a
popular success, but it would have
also dashed the hope of anything
trying to travel somewhere close to
where Dancing Brave took us.
If not this year, how about next?
On Guineas Day, the biggest of
dreams must live on.
