Away from
the Airport
Time pressure is not just the root
of problems on the airfield. The
cause of some errors can be traced
back to not enough time, or not
allowing enough time, for study,
say the Bunbury team. “Work and
life commitments can often get in
the way of theory study.” To gain
the full benefit of a briefing and
the f lying lesson, it’s important to
do the preparatory theory study,
particularly in an integrated
training course.
Radio
In some circles, the transmit
button is known as “the dumb
button”; press it and you lose
brain function. According to
the Bunbury team, poor
radio calls are usually “a
combination of not enough
study and not thinking
about the call before
making it.”
There are different ways
of learning radio calls, and
memorising the usual possibilities
is one method that often falls
short. It can seem that learning
by rote all the possible variations
is good preparation, but it may
well be too prepared, according
to Chris Koort. “When students
have memorised radio calls,
and the tower says something
unexpected, they end up quickly
becoming confused and answering
a different question.”
He says the key is to teach
students what to expect, and
to understand the reason for
each request and be f lexible in
response. Koort also makes the
observation that for overseas
students with English as a second
language, radio work is the
biggest challenge.

Similarly, it is easy, particularly
when under any sort of pressure,
to switch to automatic. You check
the oil; it’s always on 6, so you
don’t notice it’s actually 4. As
Chris puts it, “‘yep, yep, yep, yep,
yep, let’s go f lying’ isn’t effective!”
To try to head off this automatic
mode habit, Chris will often ask
a student what the mag drop was
after the run-up checks.
